Visit Pushes
Sewanee’s visit emails had been recycled for years. In 2022, they were too long, too flat, and often stated much of the same information that was to be found on the web pages to which they linked. It was time to rethink how we used email to promote visits. I reworked these communications to get a foot in the door rather than to make the sale. The rewrite made them sound more like Sewanee, helped capture the attention of our audience, and was more successful in convincing prospective students and their families to click for more detailed information. Open rates increased by an average of 5.2% and click rates increased by an average of 2.9%. Predictably, event registration also saw a marked improvement, giving our campus the chance to sell itself.

Hi {{Preferred}},
Check the headlines of the Economist, Forbes, or the Journal. Today’s business leaders are pulled in more directions than ever.
To join them, you'll have to learn to consider what’s going on outside the conference room—to see the cultural, political, and economic factors (to name a few) that will determine whether the decisions you make are right or wrong.
No pressure or anything.

As a budding copywriter, I wrote a series of lengthy emails intended to shine light on some of our most popular and distinctive academic programs. Looking at them a year later, I realized they needed some serious work. They were about 1,000 characters too long and failed to consider how emails should work in conjunction with a website. I am currently in the process of reworking these communications with a focus on cutting down character counts to around 500 and reducing the amount of information they include, improving readability for Gen Z, and boosting click rates.
External Partner Emails
As far as higher ed institutions go, our brand voice is pretty unique. It’s momentous without being solemn, it’s personal without being casual, it’s emotional without being sappy, it’s proud without being boastful. Walking those lines while still conveying everything a selective university must convince students to make the investment is no small task. In a recent six-figure marketing partnership, I was responsible for ensuring all communications matched our voice, tone, and messaging while also adhering to our partner’s strategy. So far, this has involved a total of 392 communications, including 153 emails, 147 landing pages, and 92 social media ads.
